乒乓球起源于英国，欧洲人至今把乒乓球称为“桌上的网球”，由此可知，乒乓球是由网球发展而来。19世纪末，欧洲盛行网球运动，但由于受到场地和天气的限制，英国有些大学生便把网球移到室内，以餐桌为球台，书作球网，用羊皮纸做球拍，在餐桌上打来打去。当代，乒乓球运动在中国尤为流行，中国运动员们几乎包揽了世界各大乒乓球赛事奖牌。
本周日，我们有机会在英国最著名大学的古老学院中体验这项传统运动，在源头细细品味这项为祖国带来无限荣耀的体育项目！

Like many other sports, table tennis began as a mild social diversion. Descending, along with lawn tennis and badminton, from the ancient medieval game of tennis. It was popular in England in the second half of the nineteenth century under its present name. After the name Ping-Pong, the game became a fashionable craze. There are many contemporary references to it and illustrations of it being played, usually in domestic surroundings.
